[my granparents on their 50th wedding anniversary, august 2000]My paternal grandmother Ella Anderson died this evening, only about two hours ago. I knew her pretty well, but probably not as much as I'd have liked. She's been in hospital through in Edinburgh for the last couple of months trying to fight off infections after what the doctors couldn't decide was a stroke or not. My parents and my grampa are there now, I'll probably try and head through tomorrow to see what I can do to help.

This is the third close family member I've lost in my life, the first being a total shock, my mum's brother Hugh, about 14 years ago. My Uncle Hugh was as close to a second dad as you could get, and his loss left a huge hole in my life. I know I'll feel the same way about my gran. She was great to talk to, always interested in my education, my career, she was one of the people who helped me through my breakup with my ex last year. Everyone is going to miss her so much, and I'm sure no-one more so than my grampa — they were married for over 53 years, had three kids, and were inseperable.

Goodbye, Granny — I hope I'll get a chance to have a long chat with you again soon.
